OUR GOAL

The goal of this project is to re-imagine a transformative African American Culture Center (AACC), creating a living institution that serves as a powerful guardian of African American history, traditions, and achievements. Our mission is to illuminate the rich legacy of African American culture in Tacoma, Washington, ensuring its vitality and relevance for future generations.

Psychologists have long recognized the importance of cultural centers; they are essential to the identity and vitality of any community. A cultural center serves as a living repository of traditions, values, and collective memory, while preserving the heritage of a people. It acts as the heart of cultural resilience, continuity, and expression, which is vital for both preserving heritage and nurturing a vibrant future for generations to come. Currently, there is no facility in Tacoma, Washington that even remotely resembles an African American Culture Center.

This project will also contribute to addressing the homelessness crisis in Tacoma. According to recent data from the Pierce County Point-In-Time (PIT) Count, Black or African American individuals make up 10-11% of Tacoma's population but represent about 25-30% of the homeless population. This disparity highlights systemic inequalities in housing, employment, and incarceration, which contribute to higher rates of homelessness among African Americans.

In addition, recent data from the Washington Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) reveals that during the 2022-2023 school year, approximately 2,200 students in Tacoma Public Schools experienced homelessness. Of these, 25-30% were identified as Black or African American. This means an estimated 550 to 660 Black or African American students in Tacoma School District #10 are considered homeless.
